Labral Tear and Shoulder Dislocation Treatment

The labrum is a rim of cartilage around the edge of the shoulder socket. It deepens a shallow socket and gives the ball something to sit against, and the joint’s ligaments and the long head of the biceps tendon attach to it. It tears in two different ways. When the shoulder dislocates, it can tear the labrum away from the front of the socket on its way out, and the shoulder is then more likely to come out again. Repeated overhead use, in throwing and racquet sports, swimming, weightlifting and overhead work, frays it gradually instead, often at the top where the biceps attaches. Common Questions

Do I have to have surgery?

Not necessarily. Treatment begins with the most conservative appropriate option, and Dr. Abbasi recommends surgery only when he believes it is warranted.

How long is my arm in a sling?

The arm is usually in a sling for four to six weeks, with a therapist moving the shoulder for you during that time.

How long is the whole recovery?

Four to six months of Physical Therapy is typical, with overhead and throwing activities returning last.

What is a SLAP tear?

It is a tear at the top of the labrum, where the biceps tendon attaches. It is the pattern more often seen with repeated overhead use than with a single dislocation.

My shoulder has dislocated several times. Is a labral repair enough?

Sometimes it is not. Repeated dislocations can wear bone away from the front of the socket, and where enough has gone a repair alone may not hold. Imaging beforehand shows whether that applies to you.

Do you take insurance?
